Dry eye drops FAQ

Which dry eye drops are best for me? It depends on the cause. Most dry eye is evaporative (oil-deficient), where lipid-based drops work better than plain watery tears — our guide to why your drops aren't working explains how to tell.

Are preservative-free drops better? For frequent use (more than 4–6 times a day), sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers, yes — preservatives can irritate the ocular surface with regular use.

Do manuka honey eye drops actually work? There is genuine trial evidence for Optimel manuka products in MGD-related dry eye, best used alongside lid hygiene — see the evidence review by our team.

Still dry despite the drops?

If you are using drops several times a day and still uncomfortable, the drop is usually not the problem — the diagnosis is. Most dry eye is a shortage of oil, not water, and no drop can unblock a meibomian gland. Our Dry Eye Clinic in Hamilton measures your tear film and images your glands, then matches treatment — IPL, LipiFlow, Blephasteam or BlephEx — to what we find.
