Optimel — medical-grade manuka honey for dry eye

This one surprises people, so it's worth explaining properly. Optimel uses standardised medical-grade Leptospermum (manuka) honey. It isn't a folk remedy — it's a registered therapeutic product with published clinical evidence behind it in meibomian gland dysfunction and chronic blepharitis.

The range

  • Optimel Antibacterial Manuka Eye Drops — for daytime use in dry eye with an inflammatory or bacterial lid component.
  • Optimel Manuka Forte Eye Gel — thicker, more concentrated, usually used at night.
  • Optimel Manuka Eyelid Cream — for dry, flaky, irritated lid skin.

What to expect — and this matters

It stings. For the first minute or so, and for the first week or two of use, it genuinely stings. That's the honey's osmolarity drawing fluid across the ocular surface, and it is the mechanism, not a side effect. People who aren't warned stop after two days and write it off.

If you push through the settling-in period, it works for a lot of patients whom conventional drops have failed. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have you waste the money.
