Menicon — ortho-k and rigid lens care

Menicon is a Japanese lens manufacturer, and their care products are what we dispense to most of our ortho-k and rigid lens patients. If you wear Menicon Z or a Menicon-designed ortho-k lens, this is the system built around it.

The range

  • MeniCare Plus — a one-bottle multi-action solution for rigid, ortho-k and RGP lenses. Cleans, disinfects, rinses, stores and conditions, with hypromellose for wettability. It disinfects in five minutes and stores lenses safely for up to 30 days, with demonstrated efficacy against bacteria, fungi and acanthamoeba. This is the workhorse; most of our ortho-k patients are on it.
  • Menicon Progent Intensive Protein Remover — a deep clean. Protein and lipid deposits build up on rigid lenses no matter how well you clean daily, and Progent strips them. Menicon's instruction is weekly for lenses worn daily. If your lenses have gone hazy or your vision drops through the day, this is usually the answer.
  • Ote Clean Daily Cleaner — a dedicated surface cleaner for the daily rub step.

Using Progent properly

Clean the lenses first, then place them in the vial holders. Fill with dose A, then dose B — never use A or B separately. Soak for 30 minutes maximum; longer can discolour the lens. Rinse thoroughly with MeniCare Plus before wear or storage. Single use — discard after each treatment.

Safety: Progent A is sodium hypochlorite and B is potassium bromide. Do not swallow. It will bleach fabric if spilt.

Why this matters for ortho-k

An ortho-k lens sits on your cornea overnight, reshaping it. A deposited or contaminated lens doing that is a genuine infection risk, not a comfort inconvenience. We're a specialist ortho-k practice and we're firm about this: clean the lens properly, every night, and Progent it weekly.
