Hylo-Dual — preservative-free, for when it is allergy and dryness together

Hylo-Dual is the member of the Hylo family nobody explains properly. It combines sodium hyaluronate, the lubricant used across the Hylo range, with ectoine, which forms a protective hydrating layer over the ocular surface. Like the rest of the range it is a preservative-free multi-dose bottle, so frequent dosing carries no preservative penalty.

Which Hylo is yours? Hylo-Fresh, the standard strength, suits mild to moderate dryness, screen fatigue and lens comfort. Hylo-Forte, the higher strength, suits moderate to severe dryness or the point where Fresh stops lasting. Hylo-Dual is the one to choose when dryness arrives with an allergic or inflammatory component — itchy as well as gritty, hay fever season landing on top of chronic dry eye. The ectoine acts as a physical barrier between allergen and ocular surface, which is a different job from lubrication. You can compare all three in the Hylo range.

The honest caveat: Hylo-Dual is not an antihistamine. It does not block the allergic reaction; it shields and soothes the surface. If your eyes are seriously itchy you likely need an actual anti-allergy drop such as Cromo-Fresh, with Hylo-Dual alongside it rather than instead of it. It also costs more than plain Hylo — with no allergic component, you are paying for an ingredient you do not need.

Questions we get asked

Can I use it with my contact lenses in?
Yes. It is preservative-free and lens-compatible, which is one of the main reasons lens wearers are put on the Hylo range. If you wear scleral, ortho-K or rigid lenses, it is also worth reading which saline is safe for scleral and rigid lenses — a lubricating drop and a filling saline are different things.

Will it blur my vision?
Momentarily at most. It is a drop, not a gel or an ointment — if you need something that holds through the night, that is an ointment's job and those genuinely do blur.

Does it contain a preservative?
No. The bottle is engineered to stay sterile without one, which is why it can be dosed as often as you need. The general rule: more than four doses a day, go preservative-free — this already is.

How long does it last once opened?
Months rather than weeks, which is unusual for a preservative-free product and is the advantage of this bottle design. Check the pack for the exact in-use period and write your opening date on the label.

Does it sting?
It should not. Hylo drops are generally very well tolerated. If a drop stings every time, tell us — that is information, not something to put up with.

Hylo-Dual or Hylo-Forte for severe dry eye?
Forte, unless there is an allergic component — both are in the Hylo range. Dual's advantage is the ectoine barrier, not extra lubrication.
