The daily cleaning step almost everyone skips

Boston Advance Cleaner is the daily surface cleaner in the Boston two-step system for rigid gas permeable, ortho-K and scleral lenses. It is not the overnight soak, and it is not a substitute for one.

The conditioning solution your lens sits in overnight wets and disinfects it. What it does not do is shift the protein and lipid film that builds on a rigid lens surface every day you wear it. That film is what makes a lens look hazy, what makes vision drift through the afternoon, and what makes a lens that fitted beautifully in March feel scratchy by August. A brief rub with a dedicated cleaner is what removes it — nothing else in the routine does that job.

Use it every time the lenses come out: a couple of drops on the lens, rub gently between clean fingertips for about ten seconds a side, rinse thoroughly, then store in fresh conditioning solution. Because you only use a few drops at a time, a 30ml bottle goes a long way.

One thing to be clear about: never put a lens straight from this bottle into your eye. It is a cleaner, not a conditioner, and it is not formulated to sit against your cornea. Rub, rinse thoroughly, then soak. And if your rigid lenses have stopped feeling right, talk to us before you replace them — in our experience it is far more often the care routine than the lens.

Questions we get asked

Do I really need this as well as the conditioning solution?
Yes — they do different jobs. The conditioner wets, disinfects and stores. Only the cleaner lifts the daily film off the lens surface.

How long do I rub for?
About ten seconds a side is plenty, with clean, dry fingertips. It is the highest-value ten seconds in the whole routine.

Can I rinse the lens under the tap afterwards?
No. New Zealand tap water is safe to drink but it is not sterile and can carry Acanthamoeba, which causes a rare but sight-threatening corneal infection. Never let tap water touch your lenses, your lens case, or your hands right before you handle lenses — wash and dry your hands well beforehand, using a lint-free towel.

What should I rinse with instead?
Rinse with the solution recommended for your lenses — usually your conditioning solution, or a preservative-free saline. Bear in mind that saline rinses but does not disinfect, and that preserved rinsing salines are not recommended for scleral, ortho-K or daily-wear rigid lens use. Can I use soft lens multipurpose solution instead?

Is a daily cleaner enough on its own?
