Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3: prescription lenses and fitting in Hamilton
Can I get prescription lenses in Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3? Yes, for most light-to-moderate prescriptions. Because the frame front houses the camera and electronics, lens shape and thickness are more constrained than in a standard Ray-Ban — which is exactly the check we do before you order, not after.

The short version
Ray-Ban Meta glasses are Ray-Ban frames with a built-in camera, open-ear speakers, microphones and the Meta AI voice assistant. They are everyday eyewear with tech inside, not a medical device and not a replacement for an eye examination. Most people with a light-to-moderate prescription can have them made up with prescription lenses; higher or more complex prescriptions may fall outside the supported range. They are available now in New Zealand, and Rose Optometry, 38 Lake Road, Frankton, Hamilton, will fit, dispense and set them up in person.
What Ray-Ban Meta glasses actually do
Ray-Ban Meta glasses look like ordinary Ray-Bans (Wayfarer-style and other classic shapes) but include:
- A camera in the frame front for hands-free photos and short video, with a visible recording light so people around you know when it is capturing.
- Open-ear speakers in the temples for music, calls and podcasts without anything in your ears.
- Microphones and a voice assistant (Meta AI) so you can ask questions, send messages or start a call by speaking.
- A charging case that tops the glasses up between wears; battery life is measured in hours of use rather than days.
They pair with the Meta AI app on your phone. If you'd rather have no camera at all, the Ray-Ban Meta Audio models (Clubmaster and Burbank) keep the speakers, microphones and Meta AI and leave the camera out.
Meta glasses in New Zealand: Ray-Ban or Oakley?
"Meta glasses" is really a family of smart eyewear, and two branches matter for New Zealand buyers:
- Ray-Ban Meta — the classic everyday styling covered on this page. Available now in NZ — Wayfarer, Aviator, Zena, Blayzer Optics and Scriber Optics (shop the range).

Whichever branch suits you, the same rule applies: smart frames constrain lens shapes and prescription ranges, so have an optometrist check suitability before you commit — that check is free with us and can save you an expensive mistake.
Can Ray-Ban Meta glasses take my prescription?
Usually, yes — with limits. Ray-Ban Meta frames accept prescription lenses within a manufacturer-set range that covers most light-to-moderate short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. Because the frame front houses the camera and electronics, the lens shape and thickness are more constrained than in a standard Ray-Ban, so:
- Higher prescriptions may fall outside the supported range or produce thick lens edges that don't sit well in the frame.
- Prisms and some specialty designs are generally not available.
- Progressive (multifocal) lenses can be fitted for many wearers, but the frame's shape and the position of the camera mean fitting height and frame adjustment need to be measured carefully in person — this is not a "type your numbers in a box" purchase.
- Sun, clear, photochromic and polarised lens options exist; polarised lenses can affect how you see some phone and dashboard screens, so we'll ask how you plan to use them.
If your prescription is more than about two years old, we recommend a fresh eye examination first — you'll get better vision from the glasses and we'll check the health of your eyes at the same time. Honest pros and cons from an optometrist
- Hands-free capture for parents, cyclists, tradies and anyone who wants their phone in their pocket.
- Open-ear audio keeps you aware of traffic and conversation, unlike earbuds.
- Voice assistant features (describing what's in front of you, reading text aloud) can be a real accessibility aid for people with low vision — we're happy to talk this through with you.
- They are still proper Ray-Ban frames: prescription-ready, sun-protective when fitted with UV-blocking lenses, and adjustable by an optical dispenser.
- Battery lasts hours, not days — a full day of heavy use is not realistic without the case.
- They are heavier at the front than a plain frame; people with narrow or low nose bridges may find them slide, which is why in-person fitting matters.
- Prescription range is limited; some patients simply won't be able to have them made up.
- Splash-resistant, not waterproof — not for swimming or heavy rain.
- Privacy is a real consideration: the recording light is small, and you should expect to be asked about it. Some workplaces, changing rooms and venues do not allow camera glasses.
- They need a Meta account and app; if that isn't for you, ordinary Ray-Bans or Nuance Audio hearing glasses may be a better fit.
Who they suit — and who should think twice
Good candidates: people with a light-to-moderate prescription (or none), who want sunglasses or everyday glasses that also handle calls, audio and quick photos, and who are comfortable with a phone-paired device.
Think twice if: you have a high or complex prescription; you need a frame for sport where sweat and impact are constant; you work somewhere cameras aren't allowed; or you're hoping they'll replace hearing aids (they won't — for hearing support, ask us about Nuance Audio, which is a certified hearing product).
Children and teens: we don't recommend camera glasses for children. For young people, we'd rather talk about myopia control, which protects their long-term eye health.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 is available to order now, from NZ$809 — shop the range. Prescription lenses and optional lens treatments are quoted separately once your prescription and lens choice are confirmed.
Ray-Ban Meta Audio (Clubmaster and Burbank) has no camera, and starts from NZ$629. Some colours and sizes are ready to order now; others are on pre-order because they have not yet arrived in New Zealand and we don't have a confirmed date. Each product page tells you which.
- You pay in full when you order. We no longer take deposits.
- We email you when we have a date, again when your pair ships, and every two weeks in between so you're never left wondering.
- You can cancel for a full refund at any time before your pair is dispatched.
- If your prescription turns out to be outside the supported range, we'll tell you plainly and refund you in full.
- Once prescription lenses have been made for you, the order can't be returned for a change of mind.

How much do Ray-Ban Meta glasses cost in NZ?
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 starts from NZ$809, Blayzer and Scriber Optics are NZ$849, and the camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio models start from NZ$629, depending on model, frame colour and lens. Prescription lenses are quoted separately once your prescription and lens type (clear, sun, photochromic or polarised) are confirmed.
Are there any extra costs on top of the frame price?
There can be. The "from" price covers the frame as supplied. Anything added to the lenses is quoted separately and may carry an additional cost — this includes prescription lenses, and also non-prescription options such as photochromic (light-reactive) lenses, tints, polarisation, mirror finishes and blue-light filters. Lens treatments are priced by the option you choose rather than by whether you need a prescription, so a plano (no-prescription) photochromic or tinted lens can still add to the total. We'll price your exact frame and lens combination before you commit, so you know the full cost up front and there are no surprises at collection.
Can I get Oakley Meta glasses in New Zealand?

Can I get the Meta Neural Band in New Zealand?
Not at this stage. The Meta Neural Band — the wrist-worn controller that pairs with Meta's display eyewear — is currently sold only in North America, where demand has outstripped supply. It is not distributed in New Zealand, and we have no confirmed date for a New Zealand release. As a general rule we don't comment on unannounced hardware or future release timing; when something is confirmed for New Zealand it will appear on this page. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses described here don't need a Neural Band — they're controlled by touch, voice and the Meta AI app.
How are they shipped?
Smart eyewear ships by tracked, insured courier with signature required on delivery, and is excluded from our standard free-shipping offer — these are high-value electronics and we'd rather they were covered in transit than saved a few dollars. You can also collect in practice at 38 Lake Road, Frankton, Hamilton, which is what we'd recommend anyway so we can fit and set them up with you.
Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses safe for my eyes?
They are ordinary spectacle or sunglass frames with electronics in the temples and frame front; there is no display in front of the eye and nothing that changes how your eyes focus. Fitted with UV-blocking lenses they protect like any good sunglasses. They are not a medical device and do not replace regular eye examinations.
Can I order a model that hasn't arrived in New Zealand yet?
Yes. Some Ray-Ban Meta Audio colours and sizes are on pre-order. You pay in full when you order, we email you every two weeks until your pair ships, and you can cancel for a full refund at any time before it's dispatched. We no longer take deposits.
Do I need an eye test before ordering?
If your prescription is more than about two years old, or you've never had one, yes — you'll get the best vision from the glasses and we'll check your eye health at the same time. If you have a current prescription from any optometrist, bring it in and we'll work from that.
Is there anything similar I can buy right now?
Nuance Audio hearing glasses are in stock now — normal-looking frames with open-ear speakers and directional microphones built in. They're a different product to Ray-Ban Meta (no camera, no AI assistant), but if hearing in noisy places is the problem you're trying to solve, they're worth a look.
