What the differences mean in everyday use

Battery: up to an extra hour a day

Gen 3 lasts up to 9 hours per charge, compared with up to 8 on Gen 2. The case now holds up to 50 more hours (up from 48), and both generations reach 50% in about 20 minutes. If you wear them from the morning commute to the evening walk, that extra hour makes a difference.

Camera: same quality, more discreet

Resolution hasn't changed. Both use a 12 MP ultra-wide camera with 3K Ultra HD video. Gen 3 adds up to 60 fps at 1080p, slow-motion, hyperlapse and dynamic photo. The camera and capture-light opening is 36% smaller, so Gen 3 looks much more like an ordinary pair of Ray-Bans.

Calls and voice: six microphones instead of five

Gen 3 uses a 6-microphone array with advanced wind-noise reduction, and the open-ear speakers now adjust their volume to your surroundings. If you take calls outdoors, on a bike or at the beach, this is the upgrade you'll notice most.

Controls: a button you can set yourself

Along with voice, the touchpad and the capture button, Gen 3 adds a customisable action button. You can set it as a shortcut to whatever you use most.

Fit and comfort: slimmer and adjustable

Gen 3 temples are slimmer, and the temple tips can be adjusted. That matters to us as optometrists, because smart glasses are heavier at the front than a standard frame, and a proper fit stops them from sliding. Our dispensers adjust the temple tips to the shape of your head when you collect your glasses.

Phones and connectivity

Gen 3 uses Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6 with the Meta AI app, and needs iOS 17 or later, or Android 10 or later. Check your phone's software version before you order. It's the one thing that can stop a new pair from working on the day.

Which Gen 3 frame should I choose?

The Gen 3 range in New Zealand is the Wayfarer (Regular and Large), the Aviator and the Zena. If you liked the Gen 2 Skyler, note that it isn't offered in Gen 3. The Zena is the closest cat-eye option.

Looking for the Clubmaster or Burbank? These two shapes belong to Meta's new camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses, not to Gen 3. Our best guess is that they reach New Zealand around Christmas.

Prescription lenses

All Gen 3 frames are prescription-ready, subject to the model and your prescription range. The frame houses the camera and electronics, so lens shape and thickness are more constrained than in a standard Ray-Ban. Higher prescriptions, prisms and some specialty designs may fall outside the supported range. That's why we check your prescription, lens type, fit and phone compatibility before we place your order. If your prescription is more than about two years old, book an eye examination first. You'll see better through your new glasses, and we'll check the health of your eyes at the same time.

Should I upgrade from Gen 2?

If your Gen 2 pair works well and you mostly use it for photos and music, you don't need to upgrade: the camera and storage are the same. Upgrading makes sense if the battery runs out before the end of your day, you take a lot of calls outdoors, you'd like a less noticeable camera or a better fit, or you want the Zena or the Large Wayfarer. For first-time buyers, Gen 3 is the one to get.
