TheraTears — an electrolyte-balanced artificial tear in single-use vials

TheraTears is a lubricant eye drop built around the idea that a healthy tear film is not simply water. The formula is electrolyte-balanced to sit comfortably on the ocular surface, and this pack supplies it as 25 single-use 0.6ml vials rather than a multi-dose bottle.

That format is the main reason we stock it. A single-use vial carries no preservative, so there is nothing accumulating on the eye no matter how often you dose. It is also genuinely practical — a vial in a pocket, a vial in the car, a vial in the desk drawer, none of which works with a bottle.

As a drop it is thin, comfortable and unfussy: a sensible choice for mild to moderate dryness from screens, air conditioning, wind, long drives and the general end-of-day grittiness most people describe.

The honest caveat. An artificial tear replaces the watery part of the tear film and nothing else. Most dry eye in New Zealand is evaporative — the oil layer fails, tears evaporate too fast, and adding water does not correct that. Questions we get asked

Can I use it with my contact lenses in?
Yes. Preservative-free unit-dose drops are the safest kind to use over a lens. If comfort only lasts a few minutes after instilling, it is worth reviewing the lens and its fit rather than just changing drops. If you wear scleral, ortho-K or rigid lenses, also read which saline is safe for scleral and rigid lenses — not every bottle in the bathroom cupboard belongs anywhere near those.

Will it blur my vision?
Barely, and only for a few seconds. It is a thin drop, not a gel or an ointment. If you want something that stays put overnight, a gel or ointment is the right tool — and those genuinely do blur.

How often can I use it?
As often as you comfortably need; follow the pack instructions. There is no preservative to build up, which is the usual limiting factor. Please read that as information rather than encouragement — needing drops constantly is a signal, not a solution.

Does it contain a preservative?
No. This pack is single-use vials. The rule worth remembering: more than about four doses a day and you should be on something preservative-free. See our preservative-free range.

How long does a vial last once opened?
Use it and discard it the same day. There is no preservative, so a vial is not designed to be reopened and reused.

How is this different from a bottle like Polytears?
Polytears is a preserved multi-dose bottle — cheaper per drop and perfectly fine occasionally. TheraTears vials cost more per dose but remove the preservative question altogether.
