The everyday soft lens solution, in a larger pack

Opti-Free PureMoist is a multi-purpose solution for soft contact lenses — it cleans, rinses, disinfects and stores in one bottle, so there is only one product to remember. The economy pack is simply the larger-volume option, aimed at regular wearers who get through solution steadily and would rather not reorder every few weeks.

PureMoist includes Alcon's HydraGlyde Moisture Matrix, a wetting agent designed to help a soft lens hold moisture on its surface once it is in the eye. Whether that makes a noticeable difference varies from person to person, and we would rather say that plainly than promise you all-day comfort.

Using it properly matters more than which brand is in the bottle. Wash and dry your hands, put a few drops on each lens and rub gently, rinse, then store in a case filled with fresh solution. Never top up yesterday's solution — once it has been used it has already done its work — and replace your lens case every three months.

If your lenses feel dry no matter which solution you use, the solution may not be the problem. Dry eye and blepharitis both make lens wear uncomfortable, and both are worth having looked at properly rather than solved by trial and error at the chemist.

Who it's for

  • Soft contact lens wearers using reusable fortnightly or monthly lenses
  • Regular daily wearers who go through solution quickly
  • Households with more than one lens wearer
  • Anyone wanting fewer reorders and one bottle that does the lot

Questions we get asked

Can I top up the solution already in my case?
No. Tip the case out, rinse it with fresh solution, and refill it with fresh solution every time. Topping up is one of the most common causes of contamination we see.

Can I rinse my lenses or my case under the tap?
No. New Zealand tap water is safe to drink but it is not sterile, and it can carry Acanthamoeba — an organism that causes a rare but sight-threatening corneal infection. Never let tap water touch your lenses, your lens case, or your hands right before handling lenses, and dry your hands on a lint-free towel.

Is saline an alternative if I run out?
No. Saline rinses; it does not disinfect, so lenses left in saline overnight have not been disinfected. If you have run out, leave the lenses out until you have proper solution.

Can I use it on my rigid, ortho-K or scleral lenses?
No — soft lens multipurpose solutions are not made for rigid lens surfaces. Use the RGP and ortho-K range or the scleral and specialty range instead.

How long can lenses sit in the case before I wear them?
Only as long as the storage period stated on the bottle. Beyond that, clean and disinfect them again in fresh solution before wearing. Also note the discard-after-opening period printed on the pack.

My eyes still feel dry with lenses in. Is a different solution the answer?
Sometimes, but often not. Meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis are frequent culprits and need a different approach — see our blepharitis guide and the lid hygiene range, or browse all contact lens solutions and ask us.
