Lovely — and we are going to be honest about what it is

Lula masks warm themselves the moment you open the pouch. No microwave, no cable, no waiting. They hold a gentle warmth for about twenty minutes, and then you throw them away. Five masks per box, in Lavender, Jasmine, Rose, Vanilla or Unscented.

They are genuinely nice, and we stock them because patients actually use them — which is more than can be said for a good deal of what we dispense.

Here is the caveat, and we would rather you read it before you buy. Lula is a comfort mask, not a therapeutic warm compress. Warm compression works on meibomian gland dysfunction because the oil in a blocked gland only softens above a certain temperature, and a 2024 evidence review in Ophthalmology and Therapy puts that target at an eyelid temperature of at least 40°C held for at least 10 minutes, once daily. Normal meibum melts across roughly 19–45°C, and in MGD the thickened meibum sits at the top of that range, often above body temperature (37°C) — which is why body heat alone never clears a blocked gland. For scale, the same review found a hot towel or facecloth holds the eyelid above 40°C for only the first minute and drops below target within two minutes, so it would need reheating every two minutes to be any use. A mask built to feel pleasant for twenty minutes is built for comfort rather than for softening meibum. If you have diagnosed MGD or evaporative dry eye, this is not the product that will treat it — the iFlo USB mask or the reusable Opti-Soothe are what you want.

Buy Lula for the handbag, the flight, the headache and the bad day. Plenty of our patients sensibly own both.

Who it’s for

  • Tired, strained eyes at the end of a long day on screens
  • Headaches and migraines, where a lot of people find warmth over the eyes helps
  • Flights, travel, sleep and meditation — no power and no microwave needed
  • Anyone who wants something in the bag or the desk drawer
  • Not the product for diagnosed MGD — see the caveat above

Questions we get asked

How long does the warmth last?
About twenty minutes, according to Lula. It is a gentle, comfortable warmth rather than the sustained heat that meibomian gland treatment needs — which is at least 10 minutes at an eyelid temperature of 40°C or above, once daily, per a 2024 evidence review in Ophthalmology and Therapy.

Can I reheat or reuse one?
No. They are air-activated and single use — once the pouch is open the mask is spent, and it goes in the bin afterwards. Never put one in the microwave.

Will it treat my dry eye?
It will make your eyes feel better for twenty minutes. Whether it treats the cause depends entirely on what the cause is, and dry eye, blepharitis and MGD look alike from the outside. Start with our dry eye guide, or book an assessment with us in Hamilton and we will tell you honestly whether you need a treatment or just a nice mask.

Which scent should I choose?
Clinically there is no difference between them. If your lids are inflamed or your eyes are easily irritated, choose Unscented — fragrance sitting against an already irritated lid margin is a bad idea, and we would rather you did not find that out the hard way.

How does it compare to a reusable microwave mask?
It is far more convenient and needs no equipment at all. But each mask is single use, so over a daily treatment course a reusable mask works out considerably cheaper — and gets warmer, and stays warm longer.

Do you sell a bigger box?
Yes — a 10-pack with all five scents, two of each. Our shipping is a flat rate per parcel, so a bigger box costs no more to receive.
